Their First Ever Photoshoot and I Got to Be There

Chinamans Beach · Lower North Shore, Sydney

There’s something about being trusted with a family’s very first photoshoot that genuinely stops me in my tracks. This beautiful couple had never done anything like this before. Just them, their new baby, and an open, golden afternoon at Chinamans Beach. I felt so honoured to be the person they chose for that first experience.

A First-Time Family, Finding Their Footing

When they told me it was their first photoshoot ever, I could feel the weight of that — the mix of excitement and uncertainty that comes with stepping in front of a camera for the first time as a family of three. My job wasn’t just to take beautiful photos. It was to make them feel completely at ease so that the real moments could come through.

And they did. By the time we were halfway through the session, the nerves had dissolved completely. Mum laughing as she looked at her baby. Dad pressing his face close, completely unaware of anything else in the world. And right in the middle of it all — their little one, wide-eyed and absolutely alert, taking in every bit of the world around them. Mum and dad only had eyes for each other. Their baby had eyes for the whole world.

Why Chinamans Beach Is One of My Favourite Spots

Chinamans Beach in Mosman is a quietly perfect location for family sessions on the Lower North Shore. It sits tucked away from the busyness of the city, with calm water, soft sand, and the most incredible quality of light in the late afternoon. The lush, bokeh-rich greenery in the background gives images a depth and warmth that’s really hard to replicate anywhere else.

It’s a location I return to again and again  and sessions like this one remind me exactly why.

The Moments That Matter Most

This session was a reminder of what family photography is really about. It’s not about perfect poses or everyone looking at the camera. It’s about the instinct a mother has to lean toward her baby. The way a father holds his child like it’s the most natural thing he’s ever done. The tiny face peering over a shoulder, curious and calm.

These are the moments that will matter in ten, twenty, thirty years. The proof that this little family existed, together, in this exact way, at the very start of everything.

I’m so grateful they let me be part of it.
